Young Leaders Speak
Meet Imani
I’ve Know Imani since she was in middle school, she was smart, talented and had great potential In her high school yrs. I knew she would be a strong leader and her potential kept growing. Today she is an exceptional leader and example to young black girls In Camden NJ. Recently I sat down with Imani and asked her, “After all these yrs of being in a leadership program what drives you to be a Christ like leader?
“I have a passion for my city and want to give back in any way possible. It isn’t the easiest place to live and grow up, but it will be so rewarding to be able to one day make it out successfully and help other little black girls growing up in the city do the same. A young woman like me has to work so much harder to make it, than most. It has not been an easy journey, but I’ve made it through 7 semesters of college so far. I keep a job to get myself through school. I go to class exhausted most days, but perseverance is my key to success. A lot of people thought that I would be pregnant, or a college dropout by now. I’m glad to say that I proved them wrong. I’m actually a student from Camden, NJ who has worked to be on the Dean’s list every semester while taking care of myself. My goal is to inspire others to follow their dreams. Children from Camden, and all cities like it, need to see that there is more to their cities than crime and poverty. They need to know that there are people who work hard to achieve their dreams. People who started right where they are. Our youth need to see an example of how to choose the right path, and with my degree and career, I plan to be that role model.”
